Guiding Question:
How can you make a difference in the lives of others?
Guiding Activity: Students brainstorm possible ways to help others.
1. Ask students: "Do you think kids your age can make a difference in the lives of others?"
2. Students watch youtube video about a sixth grader who raises money for Haiti earthquake victims. Allow time to discuss student reactions and feelings after viewing this video.

3. Students use the web 2.0 tool bubbl.us to work with their group members to brainstorm ways that they could help those in need.
*If students are having trouble developing their own ideas they can use the KidActivitiesand KidsCaring4Kids websites to view examples.
Guiding Activity: Students help others by playing games.
1. Students spend 20-30 minutes playing a game of their choice on FreeRice.com. ***FreeRice.com is a website where you play educational games and for every answer you get right, 10 grains of rice are donated to the United Nations World Food Program.
2. After playing the students record their total number of grains of rice donated. The class then calculates the total number of grains of rice that were able to be donated from all of them playing the game for a relatively short period of time.
3. Students will respond to a few writing prompts about their experience on Edmodo.
  • Why do you think the freerice website was created?
  • By playing this game, you helped feed people who are starving. How does that make you feel?
  • Do you feel like you made a difference in someone's life by playing this game? Why or why not?
4. Students browse other classmate's responses and make constructive and polite comments to at least 3 of their classmates.
